Brief Introduction

The School of Design of Jiangnan University, founded in 1960, is the earliest one taking art design as the main subject. It has brought up a large quantity of excellent talents for the Chinese design industry and design education and contributed to the initiating and development of the Chinese modern design.
The school has won the National Teaching Prizes in successive three years, whose teaching and research feature intercrossing and fusion. The school keeps standing contacts and co-operations with famous design colleges in teaching and research internationally, boasts the top-level in China and a certain influence in the outside world, thus possesses the basic characters of the international advanced subjects. It is the key base of teaching and research for nurturing high-level design and art talents.

The school has 8 departments and institutions, namely, Industrial Design, Architecture and Environmental Art Design, Visual Communication, Public Art, Media Art, Advertising, Modeling Art, History and Theory of Art Design. The school is also the department for training engineering masters in industrial design. Art Design subject in the school has the professor judging authority, and is the key subject in the 1st and 2nd sessions of the National 211 Project.

The school boasts famous art designers and design educationists. There are more than 100 professional teachers, in which 30 professors and 25 graduate supervisors. There are 1300 undergraduate students, 200 Master’s and Ph.D students.

In the period of the 11th 5-year Plan, the School of Design will catch hold of opportunities to deepen reform and innovation, contribute to the Chinese urbanization and industry transformation especially the growing-up of culture originality service, and make great efforts to become the best research-type design school with sharp characters in China and profound influence in the outside world.

Majors/Disciplines

There are 5 four-year specialties and 7 subjects: Industrial Design, Art & Design, Architecture, Advertising, and Industrial Design; Environmental Design, Graphic Design, Public Art, Media Art Design, Landscape Architecture, and Advertising. The above specialties all awards the Bachelor’s Degree and “the Design Art” and “the Fine Arts” awards the Master’s Degree, training engineering masters of “the Industrial Design” as well, and has a PhD station of the second-degree subject "Practice & Theory of Systematic Product Design". The School of Design is one of the 8 institutions which can train PhD in the corresponding field of industrial design and art design.

Research Orientation & Achievements

The school boasts distinct characteristics in the main research domains such as localization, humanity, ecology and digitalization of design education and art design
The teachers and students in the school have finished a set of national and provincial research projects and over 300 art design projects with 197 authorized patents, won over 350 international and national important prizes, in which over 30 national and provincial prizes, published over 150 academic books, and over 500 papers in key magazines in the home and abroad, many of which were searched by SSCI, or quoted by the materials of the People’s Congress since the reform and opening to the outside world.

Int'l Exchanges & Cooperation

With the basic features of international advanced disciplines, the school established friendly relationship and teaching and research cooperation with the Tokyo University of Art and Design, the Chiba University in Japan, the Kassel and the Berlin University of Art in Germany, the Helsinki Art and Design University, the Politecnico di Milano in Italy, the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Zurich, Switzerland, the University College of Creative Arts and De Montfort University in UK, Pusan National University in Korea, and the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, etc. More than one hundred famous foreign experts and scholars have been invited to deliver lectures or to have academic exchanges. More than twenty scholars, experts, and professors were awarded to be honorary professors of the school. Though the way of joint studio, design workshop and short-term training class, teaching practices of cross-culture and transdisciplinary international cooperative design were developed timely every year so as to form new brand of educational research.
