Brief IntroductionEstablished in 2007, School of Environment and Civil Engineering of Jiangnan University consists of the previous Department of Environment Science and Engineering in the School of Biotechnology and the previous School of Civil Engineering. At present, the School has 36 teachers, of which 6 are professors and 24 are associate professors, occupying 16.67% and 66.67% respectively. Of the faculty, 18 have PhD degree and 10 have master degree, occupying 50% and 27.78% respectively. There are the Subject Leaders of 333 Engineering, Excellent Young Backbone Teachers of Jiangsu Province, Environmental Impact Assessment Engineers, Registered Structural Engineers, Registered Architects, Registered Surveillance Engineers and Registered Construction Cost Engineers in the School too.
DeanProf. Yuan HUA Majors/DisciplinesMajor in environmental engineering Environmental issues are important strategic issues, involving both human survival and development, and sustainable economic development of the country. In 1983, Jiangnan University took the lead in setting up the Environmental Biotechnology Research Center by optimizing and reorganizing the research force. It aimed at achieving mutual infiltration among biology, environmental science, ecology, engineering, and other subjects and focused on studying and settling regional and national environmental issues by use of biological means. At present, the Environment Engineering includes the main research directions below. (1) Control projects of water pollution. It includes study and development on new anaerobic and aerobic biological treatment reactor, study on microbiological mechanisms of wastewater bio-treatment process, study on membrane biological treatment technology, and study on engineering technology of refractory wastewater treatment. (2) Resource technology of organic solid wastes. It includes such new technologies as harmless and resource use of municipal sludge, agricultural biomass, and solid wastes of city life. (3) New energy, and energy-saving and discharge-decreasing technology. It includes bio-energy, energy technology of organic waste, and clean-production technology of the biologic product process. (4) Biosynthesis of environmental friendly materials. It Includes the biosynthesis technology of both important environmental friendly substrates and bio-polymer. (5) Protection of water resources and ecological restoration. It includes protection and restoration of water resources in lakes and rivers, lake ecology, and polluted soil remediation. (6) Environmental and ecological effects of the typical pollutants and rare earth. It includes the environmental and ecological effects of typical pollution, eco-toxicology research of rare earth, and environmental and ecological effects of rare earth.
Main research directions are: (1) City construction protection engineering and disaster prevention and mitigation. (2) Key project structure dynamic catastrophic failure control. (3) Rock and soil construction prevent and alleviate disaster and control in complex environment. In line with the educational policy ¡°broad statement, strong foundation, great capacity¡±, we train students to master the fundamental rules and knowledge of structure, rock and soil, bridge and tunnel, municipal works, disaster prevention and mitigation and protection engineering, and the students can acquire the technology which a registered engineer should have, such as project planning, design, construction management, technology management, research and development ability. Main specialized course are: theoretical mechanics, mechanics of materials, structural mechanics, fluid mechanics, soil mechanics, metrology, buildings and architectural theory, building material, concrete structure, steel structure, construction technology , special structure, building enterprise management and engineering economy, etc. Graduates can be employed in architectural designing institutes, construction and erection enterprises, construction management departments, companies undertaking contracted projects, communications engineering departments, real estate development corporations, and engaged in building construction, bridge design, road engineering, and municipal engineering etc.
Students in this specialty will study management science, economics and fundamental knowledge of civil Engineering, they will master modern management branch¡¯s theory and method, then become higher superintendent and engaged in engineering construction field make project decision and whole process management. Main course arrangement is: management science, applied statistics, operations research, accounting, financial control, engineering economy, marketing, computer application, economics, construction project management, engineering assessment, contract management, real estate development and operation, construction project financing, introduction to civil engineering, engineering mechanics, engineering structure, engineering construction. Graduates can be employed in building enterprise and their management departments, construction project management departments, construction project consultancy companies, real estate agencies, and engaged in planning, management, investment, development, etc.
