Brief Introduction

School of Science in Jiangnan University, as a result of the combination of the Department of Computer Science & Information Dissemination in the former Wuxi University of Light Industry, the Department of Mathematics in the former Jiangnan College and the Department of Mathematics & Physics of Wuxi Education College, was established in 2001. Now the school consists of 8 units: the Department of Information & Computer Science, the Department of Optical Information Science& Technology, the Department of Applied Mathematics Education , the Department of Applied Physics, the Department of Engineering Mathematics, the Department of Basic Mathematics, the Department of Basic Physics and General Physics Laboratory.

The School has been accredited to offer M.S. degrees in Optical Engineering (first-level discipline) and Applied Mathematics (second-level discipline). The students for Ph.D./M.S degree in Food Physics are also currently enrolled in the School. Currently there are a total of 122 faculty members, including 12 full professors and 41 associate professors, 2 doctoral and 10 MS supervisors. 9 of the faculty members have Ph. D degree from the Chinese or Foreign institutions higher learning. 33 have the master degree. Now 26 are studying for the master degree, while 11 are Ph.D. candidates. This is a high-quality team of teachers with rational structure and highly academic level. This team offers 21 undergraduate courses, 12 graduate courses and 60 professional courses altogether. With a faculty team rigorous in learning, good at teaching, diligent in working, our school has won 13 national-level prizes and 15 provincial-level prizes. Instructed by this team, our students have got excellent achievements in the provincial mathematics contest, the physical contest and the national mathematics modeling contest.

The School has made excellent achievements not only in teaching but also in the scientific research, especially in basic mathematics, applied mathematics, information and computation, optical physics, etc. Over the past 3 years, more than 200 papers have been published in journals at home and abroad, among which there are 60 in the core journals and 20 were SCI or EI indexed. It has undertaken more than 15 research projects, 2 of which are sponsored by China’s National Science Foundation, 1 is funded by Jiangsu Provincial Science Foundation and 1 is from horizontal direction project. The School has won 1 National Science Award, 1 Provincial Science Award and 1 scientific research project has been put into practical use. The total research funds reached about 300,000 RMB. These achievements has offered a sound platform for improving teachers' quality and talent cultivation and become the impetus for further innovation and development.

Int'l Exchanges & Cooperation

The School of Science has been actively engaged in international collaborations and keeps academic exchanges with brother universities and colleges such as Tokyo University and Waseda University of Japan, California University of U.S.A., Alberta university of Canada, Nanyang Technology University (NTU) in Singapore and Newcastle University in Britain. In particular, good cooperative relations with the University of Leister in Britain has been established. Every year the School sends students to the university of Leister to study for master and doctoral degree. Furthermore, the school invites many famous scholars from home and abroad to give lectures every year. Some prominent scholars have been appointed as Distinguished Professor of our School. At the same time, some teachers are sent to study abroad and promote the research of cooperation.

The School of Science is located in the center of Jiangnan University which is called an “Eco-campus”, landscaped with beautiful greens, elegant gardens, unique bridges and tranquil streams. It was designed and built to demonstrate the concept of a picturesque campus. The beautiful environment with state-of-the-art facilities provides the School with a brand new stage from which to achieve fast, sustainable development in the near future.

“Learning and practice to perfection”, the school motto, sums up the values and code of conduct of both faculty and students. The motto expresses the university’s philosophy of imparting theoretical knowledge as well as practical skills; emphasizing accomplishments in sciences as well as achievements in the humanities; seeking truth as well as pursuing excellence through innovation.
The School of Science, with its great achievements in several key disciplines, is now striving for even greater success with the ultimate goal of becoming a high level research and teaching college of good reputation.
